Casa Salvador Allende Community Education Project
This five year project aims to provide an arts-based education program for children between the ages of 3 and 14 originating from Latin America. The Casa Salvador Allende Community Education Project is in response to the shortage of resources and programs available to the Latin American community and will provide opportunities for students to develop effective and positive interpersonal skills, creative thinking, and problem solving strategies. Further, it will promote an environment of trust and cooperation, a sense of community and cultural awareness.
More than a decade of cutbacks in public education and community programming, growing income disparities, and deteriorating neighbourhoods have had grave effects on Latin American youth and families in the Greater Toronto Area. In turn, a history of violence in countries of origin and cultural conflict between children and their immigrant parents aggravates the situation of Latin American youth and increasingly puts them at risk of performing poorly in school, dropping out, and disengaging from society. The Toronto District School Board estimates that 35% of Latin American students in grade 9 are failing to attain the necessary credits and may never graduate from high school. Latin American youth are being suspended and expelled at considerably higher rates than other sectors of the school population.
