Canadian Overseas Obstetrical Liaison
Canadian Overseas Obstetrical Liaison
In recent years, an increasing number of Canadians have undertaken charitable, humanitarian initiatives to provide various types of assistance to communities beyond the boundaries of their country. PCWF supports these types of intiatives coming from individuals or organizations through sponsoring a number of projects in different countries. These programs are a constant reminder of how our world continues to evolve into a global community.
This project, initiated by one of the Foundation's members, Doctor Richard Sims and his wife, Suzanne will be multifaceted, involving activities that can be best described as preventive medical and social programs.
Coordinated by Dr. Richard Sims, a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and his wife Suzanne, the project will be centered in St. Lucia and will involve a low resource hospital and a community with considerable poverty and attendant disease, resulting in high infant and child mortality and low life expectancy.
Suzanne will be working with women, providing education and information programs aimed at empowering women to free themselves and their families from the oppression of systemic poverty and chronic disease.
In addition to applying his medical skills, Doctor Sims will be engaged in developing and carrying out preventive medical programs. Together they are hoping to research the feasibility of expanding a reliable and universal program for the detection and prevention of cervical cancer.
They will also consider assessing local social conditions so as to assist with facilitating any groups who are working to alleviate structural poverty and disease. As well they will lend their experience and knowledge to local groups interested in cottage industries and maintaingng agricultural techniques. They would also like to look at design or redesign of public health and medical screening systems that could prevent or reduce the burden of certain diseases in countries that are struggling to treat advanced diseases where their capapcity for efficient preventative medicine is limited.
PCWF recommends this new project to its members, supporters and readers. Your interest, participation or financial support will be invaluable in launching this project.
