A Teenager's Cry
A Teenager's Cry
This project involves the writing, editing and publishing of a book, A Teenager's Cry, as told by a woman who found her way out of years of emotional and physical abuse to go on to build a happy, positive and fufilling life.
Phoenix Community Works Foundation, has undertaken this project as one of many of its artistic endevours focused on bringing creativity to the heart of resolving social issues. This is in line with our mandate to build healthy and sustainable communities.
The book is intended to inspire, encourage and motivate young teenage girls who have experienced emotional and physical abuse to create a new, positive and happy life experience.
The story is a true story about a young girl who emigrates from the UK to Canada to join her biological parents at age 15. The young woman, never having lived with her biological mother struggles to understand why her mother for some unkown reason is unkind to her. Her mother is both verbally and emotionally abusive and prevents the girl from showing any love to her biological father. Is it jealousy? Is it fear? It is like her mother has a secret that would be rekindled merely by being kind to her own daughter.
As a result, her life in Canada becomes a struggle and a hardship, both physically and emotionally.
Living with her mother for 5 years takes its toll. Our main character finds herself in a new country, with no friends and no one she can talk to. Even her relationship with her father becomes distant as the mother discourages any bonding. She soon finds herself in a deep depression and contemplating suicide. Often what she expereinces at the hands of her mother is far worse than the sexual abuse she experienced in the UK by her father's friend and cousin.
But there is a voice, a strong internal voice which makes her determined to turn her circumstances around.
Our brave, young character goes on to attain a post-secondary education, pack her bags and move to a new city to begin a new life. Her extraordinary strength, character and will to live allow her to overcome all obstacles. Her story is a beacon of hope and inspiration to any teenage girl finding herself in similar circumstances.
Currently in her mid 40's, in a loving marriage and with beautiful children of her own, the author's intention is to share her story and give inspiration, guidance and hope to teenage girls struggling with similar issues. Her hope is that other's will be inspired to grow into responsible, loving, positive adults.
